West Quaco | The Lighthouse Trail
Woof! Rumor here, ready to spill the beans (or should I say kibble?) on my latest hiking adventure. This time, I trotted along the Lighthouse Trail in West Quaco, New Brunswick, and boy, was it a tail-wagging good time!
Trail Overview
Location: Quaco Head Lighthouse, West Quaco, NB
Distance: 4.8 km out and back
Difficulty: Moderate, with a few tricky spots
Dog-Friendly: Absolutely!
Scenic Views: Oh, you bet! The humans kept talking about the stunning views of St. Martin’s Beach and the Fundy Trail coastline. I was more into the smells, though.
Trail Condition: Well-maintained, with a mix of grassy and mulched paths.
The Adventure Begins
We started our hike at the Quaco Head Lighthouse, a paw-some spot for a pre-hike sniff around and some birdwatching (or in my case, bird-chasing dreams). The lighthouse is perched on a point with jaw-dropping views—perfect for the humans to snap some pictures while I explored the nearby bushes.
The trail kicked off as a packed grassy path, narrow enough to keep things interesting but wide enough for me to easily lead the way. We followed the trail along the coast, and I had to stop every few steps to take in the salty sea breeze and check out the views. I’m pretty sure I caught a whiff of some seagulls too!
After a bit, the trail veered right and we headed into the forest. The path turned into soft mulch—great for my paws! We didn’t stay in the woods for long, though, because soon enough, we reached the highlight of the hike: the beach!
Beach Time!
Getting to the beach was a bit of a challenge, especially for my older sister. There’s a ladder to climb down, but being the clever dog I am, I found my own way down via some rocks, grass, and dirt beside the ladder. My sister, who’s 15 years old, needed a little extra help. Luckily, she had her hiking vest on, so Mom could give her a paw and help her down to Dad, who was waiting on the beach.
Once we all made it to the beach, it was like stepping into a private playground. There were hardly any humans around, just loads of rocks to climb, driftwood to sniff, and seaweed to, well, eat. Mom wasn’t too happy about the seaweed, but hey, I have a golden gut, so no harm done—just made me really thirsty!
We explored the beach from one end to the other. At the far end, there was a big rock that Dad decided to climb while we watched, fully expecting to have to call 911. Thankfully, he made it back down without needing a rescue.
